Re: Sgt. Charles May, Royal Canadian Engineer

This plaque was placed by the municipality of Troarn on June 5, 1986 to commemorate Major J.C.A Roseveare and his men who blew up this bridge at dawn on June 6, 1944 This thread may be helpful, a lot of images and talk of bridges. Though from the airborne perspective, but still. http://www.thefewgo...

There is a plaque at that bridge currently, trying to find a clearer photo so we can read it.

Re: Sgt. Charles May, Royal Canadian Engineer

Phil, I was re-examining the WW2 maps and the ones you posted. Unfortunately the road that you “overlaid” the air photo on didn’t existing in WW2.......so this can’t be overlaid in the right spot???........UNLESS this is overlaid on the railroad track that seem to run in this area about that time??...

Re: Sgt. Charles May, Royal Canadian Engineer

I found some aerial images from 1944, and I've overlaid this one onto a current image. It looks to me that it's a railroad crossing the canal diagonally and proceeding into the town. This could the rail bridge mentioned in the previous account. You can also clearly see another bridge North of the ro...

Re: Sgt. Charles May, Royal Canadian Engineer

Here's an account of interest. So the bridge was built on 22 Aug 1944, here's some items from notes from 18 Aug in the same area. Now Goustranville is just West of the canal crossing bridge that we've been looking at, so to say that the 12th Parachute Battalion started West of Goustanville and then ...

Re: 3rd Canadian Infantry Division HQ + 13th Field Regiment, RCA

From an older research thread. He was awarded a Mention in Dispatches as an RCA Major (OLMSTEAD) in March, 1946. No unit is mentioned, and as is generally the case, there is no citation. That should help, most regimental histories will include Awards, so a faster way to determine his unit. kez As it...
