Hello to all,
Reenactor and collector of Royal Canadian Engineers, I am investigating an incident that occurred in September 1944 in the commune of ECAULT (Pas-De-Calais, France).
On 22 September 1944, the 6th field coy RCE detached 9 men with their half-track to clear the road between ECAULT and CONDETTE in Pas-De-Calais. Unfortunately, the mine detectors did not detect a German 88mm shell buried in the road. The armoured vehicle of the group jumped on it and instantly killed 4 crew members and wounded 5 others. One of the wounded will die a few hours later of his wounds.
The bodies were buried temporarily in the commune of ECAULT and then transferred in 1945 to the Canadian cemetery in Calais.
In order to be able to pay homage to these liberators who fell in the shadows, I am looking for any information (military as well as civilian) concerning the following soldiers:
- A20681 SPR Charles Edward BERRY (Killed - died on impact)
- B25507 SPR Dawson James GOURLIE (Died of wounds)
- B29618 LCPL Norman Francis RUNDLE (Wounded)
- B82911 SPR Marshall Lewis McCONKEY (Killed)
- B130926 SPR Henry (Harry) SAMBELLS (Killed - died instantly)
- D47049 SPR Douglas Randolph ABBOTT (Wounded - wounded)
- K29307 LSGT Mark Henry HANNAH (Wounded)
- K37974 SPR Stanley Beryl KELLY (Wounded - wounded)
- M101711 SPR George Washington PRESTLIEN (Killed - died instantly)
YOU WILL FIND THE PHOTO OF THE TEMPORARY GRAVE PLATE FIND BY A FRIEND IN A FARM, WHICH WAS THE BEGINING OF THE HISTORY.
Thank you all for your help.
