Found records indicating that he was “in transit” on USS Nassau from San Diego to Pago Pago Samoa from 25 Sept to 7 Oct 1943. They transport F4U Corsairs and SDB’s to Pago Pago

All,
Hat's off to your outstanding research on Capt Carter!

By way of introduction, I'm a retired Marine Aviator & cousin (once removed) to an RCAF American declared MIA on 25 November 1942. After conversation with me, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (VA-07) introduced HR1372 to honor all Americans who served in the British and Canadian armed forces during WW2 with a Congressional Gold Medal. My ultimate legislative goal is to amend U.S. Code so Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency funds can be used to search for American servicemembers who died fighting in foreign uniforms.

This effort is important to me and others, as it is the first step in correcting a narrative taught to American schoolchildren -- that while neutral prior to the Pearl Harbor attacks, America supplied arms and materiel to Canada and Britain. This narrative fails to mention 10,000+ Americans who volunteered to serve in Canadian and British uniform. That is the equivalent of a U.S. Army division!

In support of this effort, I am cataloguing the names and basic information of every American who crossed the border to fight before their country decided to follow them to fight our nation's enemies. I am in contact with the curator at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada and others in the U.S., but this is the first really scholarly effort to learn the stories of these men I've seen (note: at least one individual has self-published on the issue but is determined to share his information only when sold). I have shared the results of my research so far with Rep. Spanberger's staff, after using GIS software to correlate each fallen RCAF American with the legislator who serves the aviator's hometown today.

I've been interviewed by Washington D.C. print and television news organizations, and Global News. Latter interview here: https://globalnews.ca/news/10076090/rem ... americans/

I would greatly appreciate connection to any who research this topic.

Did you retrieve after action reports from NARA? I have seen them for sale at paperlessarchives.com but thought I'd ask.

Greetings and Welcome to Wartimes.ca PARKYNMB,

I am retired USAF, aircraft crew chief, while stationed in the U.K. (F-111's) I picked up a book about the Eagle Squadrons and their history, starting out Royal Air Force Squadrons, then in September 1942 all three squadrons transferred Planes and personnel to United States Army Air Force. I already knew about the volunteers of the Flying Tigers, so about 11 years ago, I started researching to see if other Americans Volunteered. WOW, with the AWESOME help of people on this site, I have a rather good list, by no means complete, of Americans with the RAF, RCAF, RAAF, RNZAF, SAAF, Canadian Army, British Army, Canadian Navy and British Navy. I have also been working on Americans that where too old to fly combat, so they joined the Ferry Squadrons ferrying aircraft from the U.S. and Canada over to the U.K. as civilians.

I live in Texas and have so far found 375 Texans that crossed the border into Canada to join in and help the Commonwealth nations.

Americans were in the British Army and RAF at Dunkirk, France, ... Americans were part of the Dieppe Raid, (Not the 50 U.S. Rangers) example: 61 P.O.W.'s, 13 K.IA.'s and 5 W.I.A. as well as the other operations.

Example R.A.F./R.C.A.F. aircraft, KIA, KIFA, WIA, Safe: Avro Lancaster: 304 Americans, Handley Page Halifax: 318 Americans, Vickers Wellington: 292 Americans, Hawker Hurricane: 147 Americans (Eagle Squadron not included), Supermarine Spitfire: 323 Americans (Eagle Squadron not included) just a sample

When the U.S. was brought in the war, many Americans transferred over to the U.S. Forces, but many did not, as they were turned down by U.S. Forces for one reason or another, so they stuck with who they trained with.

What I have on your relative, you probably already have this info,

Lancaster, R5695, R.A.F. No. 207 Squadron, Lost on November 25, 1942

Aircraft took off from RAF Langer, Langer, Nottinghamshire, England on a bombing mission to Haselunne, Germany. Aircraft failed to return to base from mission. Aircraft cause of loss and location is not known, Aircraft and crew were lost without a trace.

Crew:
Pilot: P/O A.J. Parkyn, J/16080, RCAF, Palesades Park, New Jersey, U.S.A.
Flt Eng: Sgt J.J. Gallimore, 632517, RAF, Denton, Lancashire, England
Nav: W/O II J.L. Guichard, R/83204, RCAF, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.
Nav: W/O II W.J. Vandervoort, R/74630, RCAF, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Nav: Flt Sgt J.M. Allen, R/93188, RCAF, Mimico, Ontario, Canada
Gnr: P/O E.E. Chouinere, J/16081, RCAF, Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A.
Gnr: Sgt J. Slater, 1536441, RAFVR, Hyde, Cheshire, England
Gnr: Sgt W.F.R. Webb, 1320645, RAFVR, Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England

Be glad to help any way I can if you need it !

All the Best !

George

Actually I use Fold3.com a lot, and also use the National Archives a lot.

As you can see George (post above) is the expert on American’s in Commonwealth Service, and I try to help him when I can……….so if you have specific questions or research you need, let George and I know, we’ll do our best to get you what you need.

My background is an retired Officer in the Canadian Forces (Military Engineers), so hopefully I can help when needed

Cheers

Temujin,

Hope all is going well, here it's the same old thing, released from the shoulder doc, but the spine doc still wants to poke and prod a bit more :-)

As always, I must mention that I would not be where am at if it was for yours, Phils, 78SqnHistory BFBSM and others help and guidance, and I sure do appreciate the help, last couple of moths been working on the Ferry groups, ATFERO, RAFFC, RAFTC, 45 Group, RCAF 124 (Ferry Squadron) and Air Transport Auxiliary.

A Good site to look at for the Air Transport Auxiliary: https://www.ata-ferry-pilots.org/

Point of interest 19 of the ATA American Females and 2 of the ATA Canadian Females went to Texas, U.S.A. to be a part of the W.A.S.P.'s !

All the best, and again, Thanks Everyone, Cheers !

George
