Pete Roy Dickau 8th field ambulance
Pete Roy Dickau 8th field ambulance
Looking for some help on my Grandfather.
He really did not share much info at all. Basically all the info I have is little tidbits my father and uncle heard. He told my uncle he was a fitter mechanic for the 8th can field ambulance. He went to England in 1940 and stayed till 1945. He was in France Belgium holland and Germany.
He delivered fuel to the front and took prisoners or wounded men back.
He was at dday +5.
I would like to try and piece together his time in ww2 so any help would be great.

His name is on the Nominal Roll on embarkation to England on Empress of Australia, 17 July 1940, on link below. Look on the MT Section list on link.

Re: Pete Roy Dickau 8th field ambulance
You can order his military records……but they will take a long time to recieve them (up to a year). Follow the instructions on the link below

Re: Pete Roy Dickau 8th field ambulance
Excellent Photos. His records can take anywhere from 6 months to 1 year + to get……..I know, it seems a long time, but with WW2 veterans passing away by the hundreds they are getting lots of family requests for records. Last records I ordered took over a year.
Once you get them, they will be written in “military speak” (I call it), all acroynms and things that you may not know what the heck they are talking about, but if you come back to us, we can help you decipher them (I’ve done hundreds of these) and tell you what they say and which units he was with.
Cheers, hopefully talk to you again next NOV……..BUT in the mean time, if you have questions, please let us know, we’ll try and answer them for you
Below, is a bit of history on the unit, not much, but all I could find so far
Re: Pete Roy Dickau 8th field ambulance
Thank you Temujin.
I am wading through little snippets my dad and uncle have heard, some of the things sound eerily similar to military movies they may have confused with memories of him.
I have to say I have been really enjoying reading everything on this and the ww2talk forums. I am currently the youngest member of my local museum board and I am truly really enjoying learning everything I can.

And this record, the 8th Field Ambulance was NOT on the Dieppe Raid, but they were tasked to meet the ships bringing back troops, wounded and survivors
Re: Pete Roy Dickau 8th field ambulance
In one article about him it said he transferred to the Royal Canadian Service Corps. Which sounds closer to what he told my uncle about transporting prisoners and petrol.
Any tips on how to find more about which unit he transferred to?

Re: Pete Roy Dickau 8th field ambulance
Yes I saw that……..actually he didn’t “transfer”, he was already in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, he just was assigned to a Hospital Unit (8th Cdn Field Ambulance) as a driver for them. What the article means is that he was “transferred” to a RCASC unit………so we have to find the unit that he was transferred to…….AND this information is in his Service Records, that you’ve ordered. There’s no other way to find out which unit he was with UNLESS you have a letter of some other information, or a newspaper article etc that maybe may “mention” which unit he was with.
I will take another look and see if I can spot anything else
Also, I wanted to welcome you to the website, and we are here to answer any question you may have (if we can) either about your relatives or ANY question on Canadian’s involvement in any of the previous wars (1812, South Africa, WW1, WW2, etc)……..so ask away, if we can’t answer it, it most likely CAN’T be answer (I’m kidding, we’ll do our best to answer it, or point you in the right direction to find the answer)
Cheers and welcome
