DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
Hello,
I have the service files from DAVISON James Carl,
He enlisted with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders (signalman) , came in England with the regiment on the SS Orion in 1941
In 1942, he was transfered to 3rd Div Signal.
He was disembaked in France on DDAY with 3rd Div Signal.
I am looking for more information :
- ww2 period military photo, when he was in NNSH or 3rd Div Signal
- information about his job :
June 1943, qualified : Operator Class C
July 1944, qualified : Operator Class B
What was his job during the normandy battle ?
what is the difference between Operator Class C and Class B ?
thank you for your help
cheers from France.

Re: DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
Found his service number: F49653 = he joined the Army in Military District 6, which was Nova Scotia and he joined the North Nova Scotia Highlanders
Operator or Group C, B, A etc: These were trade qualifications. As he was a “signaller”, this means that he would have taken course, and then be tested at each level of his trade training. Each level taught the man more about his job and gave him more responsibility. For example, when you join, you are at the “basic level” in your selected trade, and as you learn more, you go “up” in trade skill……AND of course, each level up means “MORE PAY”……..AND, certain rank levels require you to have a “higher Operator or Group level” in order to be promoted to that rank

Re: DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
Thank you very much for the researches.
Bellow are some information about him.
Understood for the A / B / C class.
Is it possible to know the type of radio he used regarding the qualification (WS18/WS38/WS19 ...)
Bellow some pictures i found of 3rd Div Sig. HQ in Normandy (18 June 44)
Thank you

Re: DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
Looking at his records…….I note he was “attached” the Queens Own Rifles of Canada.
The 3rd Infantry Division Signals would have “signalmen” attached to each unit in the Division to supply direct communication support from the Unit back to 3rd Division HQ’s and to the 8th Cdn Infantry Brigade
So “I think” that on D-Day, he may have been one of the men from 3rd Division Signals that was “attached” to the QOR on landing
Is name is NOT on the list for the 3rd Div Signals group landing on D Day (the HQ’s elements of Division Signals) so this would tell me he was attached to another unit
Here are a few records that show the Division Signals Attached directly to the QOR on landing
I’m going to see if I can find him in any other records of the QOR

Re: DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
As far i understand from the service file, he was attached to QOR from :
- 23 Oct 43 to 2 Nov. 1943
- 25 Nov 1943 to 30 Nov 1943.
If he is not listed in 3rd Div Sign listings, i am agree with you, he was attached to another unit.
On your first document "Trades test", Davison is listed in "K section".
On your last document, from Queen own rifles organisation on DDAY, it seem that men of K section (8CIB) 3rd Div Sign were attached to QOR.
Should we consider that the K section 3rd Div SIgn was attached to 8CIB and note to QOR itself ?
Then, some men of K section from 8CIB, we deployed with QOR on DDAY ?
I didn't found Davison in QOR embarkation lists, the key is maybe the 8CIB embarkation list ?
Thank you

Re: DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
Why I “think” he was still assigned to the QOR’s, as his records do NOT indicate he “Completed Attachment”…….and if you look, other times he was “attached” to units, when he was completed his records would be marked “C/attach”………but his records do not say this???toutfou wrote: ↑Tue Jun 20, 2023 3:10 pmAs far i understand from the service file, he was attached to QOR from :

It’s just a guess, here are the records from 3 Div Signals and the men who landed on D Day and which Landing Craft……and his name is not on this list?? So leads me to believe he was “attached” to another unit

Re: DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
There is another page in the service file,
only the first attachment is reported (- 23 Oct 43 to 2 Nov. 1943)
The second attachement is not reported (from 25nov.).
Again, than you for the help

Re: DAVISON James Carl - 3rd Div signal (DDAY)
So this record CONFIRMS that he was not attached to the QOR on D Day………so he may have been attached to someone else??? Or assigned a “K” Section job with another unit….
You notice there are TWO records with almost the same info. This is because each man had two and sometime 3 different copies of his records, one at his Unit, one sometimes at Brigade or Division and the last one at CMHQ in London.
When these files were all sent of LAC, they were combined into ONE FILE, so each man’s records has multiple pages of the SAME record…..but it’s BEST to read each, because sometime they slightly differed and the one “behind the lines” were usually typed, easier to read, and sometimes had more information than the “unit record”
So, the search goes on
