Driving school and Daily Orders Part ll
Was wondering if anyone could help. I was hoping i could find the Daily Orders Part ll for the "S-5 Driving and Mechanic School" in wooodstock Ontario, during the war years. I'm specifically looking for the time from Sept. 27th 1945 to March 1946. My Uncle was a paratrooper and when they were disbanded in Niagara of sept. 1945, he ended up in S-5 Driving and Mechanic School (S5 D and M S). I found the DO"s ( Daily Orders) that sent him there but nothing after(1st Canadian Parachute Battalion). The School closed up in March of 1946 and as it looks like on his Service Records he was returned ( at least on paper) to the paratroopers, but they had been disbanded.
Re: Driving school and Daily Orders Part ll
I have some experience researching Pt II Orders, with the caveat that it was more than 15 years ago and some of the details are fuzzy.
I theory, they exist at LAC. They are considered restricted records and do not typically show up in their search tool. It seems they were usually included with the war diary (lists of appendices to the WD often include them) but have been separated reflecting their restricted status. They are restricted due to the amount of personal information that is included. I think this is spurious, much of the same information can be found in open records, but that is the policy. Some or all of the Pt II orders can be found in other archives, presumably preserved by the unit. I've only encountered them for Infantry Bns, not sure if they exist for units like schools, etc.
I had to ATIP the records and get approval on the purpose of my project which was compiling a nominal roll. Based on my description of what I wanted, LAC staff were able to find them. They cannot be copied and can only be reviewed on site with supervision by staff.
What are you looking for in these records? I would expect little or no additional detail beyond what you see in the service file. If I understand the process, Pt II Orders simply 'announced' a man joining leaving the unit and that info was copied into the personnel file. I understand Pt II Orders as 'outward facing' information, telling the Army bureaucracy about personnel changes. Pt I orders are more 'inward facing' to the unit and may include more information on postings within the unit, courses etc.
Hope this is helpful.

Re: Driving school and Daily Orders Part ll
This information is very interesting and helpful. Thank you for answering. I believe it is spurious as you indicated. When i found the part ll daily orders I was able to match up the dates with my Uncles Service Records. That is when he was with the 1st canadian parachute training battalion but nothing after. Ive been attempting to follow in his footsteps and write up his story so family members can remember what he had to sacrifice at this time in the world so we could have what we have now. Thank you again for this information.
