Alonzo James Brackett died in Terrace, British Columbia 12 January 1981. His WW1 service file is online and contains a note from the DVA confirming death. http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op= ... B0989-S045

Does it seem significant that we have both "Alonzo Jas Brackett" which would seem short for Jasper, and "Alonzo James Brackett"?

"Jas" was short for James. Much like "Chas" for Charles. It's still used a lot in the UK.

Terrace would tie in nicely with 107 Fd Bty from Cranbrook too. I've got contacts with the Legion and 61/107 Bty Association out there. I'll reach out and let you know what I find.

A little more information on the three artillerymen:

Ernest Curtis was born 12 October 1909 in Alexander, Whitehead, Manitoba; deceased 7 September 1995 in Brandon, Manitoba.

Roger Griffith was born 1906, Township 8, Range 18, Brandon, Manitoba. His parents were Gwynfred and Helen Griffith.

Alonzo James Brackett was born in Herring Cove, Nova Scotia.
The family had some connection with British Columbia as they appear there in the 1901 census. Father James is shown as a farmer.
He married Elizabeth Bonner at Halifax 30 March 1916. Born 1895, there is no record of her after 1919.
Following his war service he enlisted in the RCMP as he appears on a manifest of alien passengers in 1923, sailing from Prince Rupert, BC to Ketchikan, Alaska; final destination Dawson City. Under marital status he puts himself as single. He was accompanied by two other RCMP personnel, William W. Anderson and Howard Cronkhite.

I've found an obituary for Alonzo Brackett's sister's son (who would have been Alonzo's nephew). His sister seems to have been Margaret T Moriarty (as I suspected Moriarty was spelled wrong on the Pioneer Medallion application I posted previously). Margaret married one Dennis Moriarty. Plenty of relatives listed here, though not direct descendants of Alonzo Brackett, but that of his sister. They may know if Alonzo remarried, or if he had any children with Elizabeth Bonner before they were separated.

Halifax Chronicle Herald: Monday August 4, 2008

MORIARTY, Donald Francis - 83, Halifax and Shad Bay.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Donald's passing in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, on Saturday August 2, 2008.

Born in Halifax to the late Dennis and Margaret (Brackett) Moriarty, Donald grew up on Wellington Street in Halifax and attended College Street School. Donald had a progressive career that spanned over 35 years at Canada Post. He held many positions including that of postmaster for Halifax.

Later he took on the key role as the Project Manager for Canada Post during the development and implementation of the Almon Street plant which introduced new mechanized sorting. He then became Manager of Collection and Delivery for metro Halifax prior to his retirement. "Dinny and Fran" spent many years in the community of Shad Bay where their home was a welcoming place for friends and family. Here they renovated the Moriarty family cottage that was originally constructed by his father.

They enjoyed many outings on Prospect Bay with friends and family on their boat or fishing with the grandchildren. Despite his many health issues in his retirement years he was able to travel to China, Australia, England, Europe and winters in Florida. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather (fondly known as "Pa"), great-grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Frances Elizabeth (Nunn); daughter, Christine and children Christopher and Colin Cahoon, Jennifer (Tony Tenwolde), Bridgewater; son, Don (Linda) and grandchildren Nick (and Marcie), Luke and Jacquelyn, Dartmouth; son, Michael (Bev) and grandchildren Lora, Melanie and Peter, Halifax; daughter, Susan (Rick Servatiak) and grandson Jeff Horne, Halifax; son, Tom and grandchildren Chelsea, Cora Leigh and Erin, Glace Bay; son, Bruce (Fiona) and grandchildren Ryan and Kate, Perth, Australia; daughter, Barbara (Michael Furlong) and grandchildren Nicole and Jill, Halifax; son Brian (Monica), grandchildren Alex and Kathleen, Halifax.

He was predeceased by his youngest son, Peter, and is survived by granddaughter, Kaitlyn. He is survived by great-grandchildren, Devin, Jacob, Liam, Sophia and Gaylin. He is also survived by brother, Peter, St. Stephen's, N.L.; sisters, Margaret Sullivan, Halifax; Ruth MacDonald, Dartmouth, and Jean (Dave Falconer), Halifax. He was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy and Joan (John Alguire), and his brother, Douglas.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, in St. Agnes Church, Halifax.

Private family burial at a later date. Thanks to his family doctor Harris Crooks and the 5th floor staff at the Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 5th Floor, Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, or Veterans' Memorial Garden.

An obituary for Christina Agnes Moriarty, who would have been Margaret (Brackett) Moriarty's granddaughter (if I'm following correctly), Alonzo Brackett's grandniece.

https://sweenysfuneralhome.com/tribute/ ... tent-start
MORIARTY, Christine Agnes - Age 67 of Bridgewater, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2017 surrounded by her beloved family. ‘Chrissy’ was the eldest child of Donald and Frances (Nunn) Moriarty of Halifax and older sister to eight siblings.

She also had three children of her own, Christopher Cahoon, Jennifer (Tony) Tenwolde and Colin (Allison) Cahoon. Chrissy’s children were the apple of her eye making sure they always had more than they ever needed. You could always hear that familiar voice calling out to one of her children with “can I get you anything?” She was also the ‘mother’ to any and all friends of Chris, Jenn and Colin, as her house was the house so many grew up in. She also was a volunteer with the South Shore Mustangs Major Midget Hockey Club where she was a host parent for numerous players over the years. Chrissy had a great sense of humour and was always quick to give a smile and loved to laugh. Upon earning her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from Dalhousie University, Chrissy taught briefly in Halifax before making Bridgewater her home in 1983. Chrissy valued education greatly as she went on to earn her Masters in Education from Saint Mary’s University. She was also the mother figure to numerous little ones as she taught at the elementary level for 30 years with the lion share of those years at Newcombville Elementary School in the Primary and Grade One levels.

Chrissy is survived by her mother, Frances Moriarty; children, Christopher Cahoon, Jennifer (Tony) Tenwolde, Colin (Allison) Cahoon; grandchildren, Brad Tenwolde, Cassidy Tenwolde, Henryk Tenwolde, Stella Cahoon, Ruby Cahoon and Spencer Cahoon, sisters; Susan (Rick) Servatiak and Barb (Mike) Furlong; brothers, Donald (Linda) Moriarty, Mike Moriarty, Tom Moriarty, Bruce Moriarty and Brian (Monica) Moriarty, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Donald Moriarty and brother, Peter Moriarty.

Funeral mass will take place 4 p.m., Saturday, July 8, at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, Deacon J. Patrick Morris officiating with a celebration of life to follow at the Bridgewater Curling Club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the South Shore Mustangs Major Midget Hockey Club for the development of annual scholarship. On-line condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
