It would be extremely helpful if the ships' logs were available online.
You are right......I think they are the only “major” source that isn’t on line from LAC....Of course not ALL war diaries and Operational Record Books are on line either, but a lot of them.......and Troop ship sailings etc etc

It may be that they have NOT digitized them yet???

I don’t know if you know, but right now, if you have a British National Archives membership (their free) you can download ANY of their documents that are on line for FREE. I’ve been finding lots of new information out.....but again, a LOT of files have NOT been digitized yet, so are not available.

But it is a big help with what they have. I’ve been using them now for a lot of RCAF records for the Middle East squadrons.

Cheers Mark

Hey Mark.......I tried to find the Ships Logs for HMS Portchester Caste on Line at the BNA.......and didn’t find it......BUT I did “spot” this (Record has NOT been digitized but the titile information is interesting.

Here’s the title below

Awards to 11 officers and men of HM Ships Portchester Castle and Helmsdale for sinking U743 in the Atlantic Sept 9 1944

Ordering and viewing options
This record has not been digitised and cannot be downloaded.

You can order records in advance to be ready for you when you visit Kew. You will need a reader's ticket to do this. Or, you can request a quotation for a copy to be sent to you.

Order in advance Request a copy
Reference: ADM 1/30233

NOTE: This is the DATE that their now claiming these ships sunk U 484???.........so again, does this mean the original records are WRONG and the ships did NOT sink U743?.......

On September 9th, 1944, HMS Portchester Castle, along with the frigate HMS Helmsdale, depth charged and sank U484 off the north west of Ireland. Some reports state that the U743 was destroyed in this action but the wreck of U743 was found in 2001 and is now thought to have been lost due to collision with an unknown vessel.

I have been downloading as much as I can of the ORBs of the RAF Squadrons in Malaya at the time my father was their during the Emergency. And it is an excellent source.

WWI war diaries are another section I have been plundering.
