Hi Temujin,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Giving the families some details regarding the operations their relatives were on when they were lost, injured or taken PoW is part of the Chronology too. Which is why I have a brief synopsis of Bomber Command operations for each operation, culled from Middlebrook's Bomber Command War Diaries and other sources. So they can place their effort or sacrifice into the larger events.

The first day I had a copy of They Shall Grow Not Old we looked up a co-worker's uncle, and sent a copy of the entry to his mother.

It was the first information she had heard of what happened to her favourite older brother.

I know that information has been lacking for families, and anything that can be found for them is fantastic. I know that during my research for families and others, I strive to find anything that tells them “more” about what their relative may have been doing, where, why etc but it is hard (as official documents sometimes tell you very little).

The Bomber Command records I shared with you are one source that can tell us the “big picture” of what the various Squadrons took part in missions. It doesn’t usually tell us the “where and why” for specific bomber losses, but it can help by know “what the mission was” for that particular crew etc.

Sorry, I’m babbling now, let me know if you have any more specific questions or research you need done…..I’m always here (a bit older every day and I find I don’t “research” as hard as I use to (taking hours going into records, looking up “crew mates” etc to see if I can put together the story) but it keeps my mind alert (well, my wife would tell you otherwise)

Cheers

Hi Temujin,

Getting old is not for the weak. I will keep this in mind and only ask when I am really stumped.

Most of what I am checking is easily found, but the Library and Archives Canada site on Canadian War Dead has been invaluable. But there are always questions that elude us from time to time.

Many, Many Thanks for your work, and I'll ask for your help when I'm really stuck.

All the Best,

Paul Squires
