Hi at Wartimes,

Sgt Walter Lewis RCAF 1404 of Trenton, Ontario is recorded as dying of natural causes, age 41, March 23, 1940. Does anyone know the circumstances of his death and what unit he was attached to at the time, and was he married?

Many Thanks in advance,

Paul Squires

Greetings Paul Squires,

Will be interested if someone can find some info on this Warrior, been researching Americans that crossed the border prior to the U.S. joining in, all the warriors that I have found in the RCAF had service numbers starting with C, R, or J, have not seen any with just numbers. will be interested to see why!

Hope all is well !

Cheers :)

George

Hi George,

I believe that Sgt Lewis was a pre-war Airman in the RCAF (age 41 when he died) and thus had only a number without a prefix.

Hugh Halliday has posted on the RAF Commands site on the complexities of the RCAF Serial Number system. Here is one

and this is in more detail
