Hi All,

I seem to have hit a few bumps in the road updating They Shall Grow Not Old, all on the same date.

First is Air Gunner Sgt Edward James Stansfield 1057672 RAF, lost from 408 Squadron Hampden AD829 August 29-29, 1942. TSGNO lists him from Hamilton, Ontario, and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site from Kirkham, Lancashire. Not unusual. He is also listed on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial, which is a good indication that he was a resident in Canada at one period.

But there is no source I have found that connects this airman to Hamilton.

As a member of the RAF he does not have any record in the Second World War Service Files – War Dead, 1939 to 1947 at Library and Archives Canada.

Can anyone provide any information on this?

All the Best,

Paul Squires

Paul, looking for you. So far all I could find is information on a ship when returning to Canada from England. I can’t confirm yet if this is the right man yet

Hi Temujin,

Well that is a connection. I'll add that to the Errata.

Many Thanks, again.

Of interest, perhaps, is that I found in the file on the loss of Sgt R.A. Bishop RCAF and Sgt D. Houston RCAF(USA) from the SS Shantung a listing on the other RAF and US volunteers involved. Totally off topic but possibly of interest to another researcher.

Note US volunteer pilot "Russell Weirarlo" is R. Dicarlo.

All the Best,

Paul
