I came across this post while searching for more information on the 10th Canadian Armoured Regiment. I saw in an earlier post in this thread there were was detailed information on tanks and crews from the 6th CAR, and I’m hoping to find out more information on the 10th CAR. My sons Maternal Great Great uncle was in the 10th CAR, landed in Normandy on June 6th and was KIA on or around July 4-6 during operation Windsor, the battle for Carpiquet airfield. I’ve read over the War diaries for the 10th CAR and read over the service records we have, but information is scarce.
Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. The only information I’m sure of is Trooper David Cramer was part of the 10th CAR, as a Dvr Mech Tk “C”, which I understand he was the driver of an M4A4 Sherman. Any more information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Justin

A start to the search, his name is on the list of DOW’s in the May 1945 war diaries.

Just a note on the records below. These state he “Died of Wounds” on the 6 July 1944………..so this means that he could have been “wounded” much early than the 6th Jul 44 but he “DIED” on the 6th July. Op Windsor started on the 4th July 44, so he may have been wounded anytime before the 6th……..but it’s possible he was wounded even earlier than this.

Still searching

Thank you so much for the additional information. I was going over his service records again, and I must have missed previously that he was assigned to “B” squadron of the 10th CAR. I’m hopeful there exists similar records of the tanks and men on the D-Day landings like you have for the 6th CAR. The records I have also show he was initially reported missing on July 6th, later confirmed KIA that same day. I’m hopeful more information on his tank and crew can be uncovered, as I would like to build an accurate scale model of his tank, as it may be a DD Sherman, an M4A4, or an M4A1. I’m very thankful for your help, and happy that I was able access this incredible resource. It will be very helpful in uncovering more of my family’s military history.

Thank you and kind regards,

Justin

Was going to suggest caution with the indication of B Sqn in 1941, but one of the 1944 letters from family seeking details also mentions B Sqn, so a stronger clue.

Might also look at Lieut AE Rogers, also Missing (X6 list) and later confirmed killed 6 Jul 44. Possibly his crew, slightly better chance of finding detail on an officer.

Quick look at Rogers' file didn't reveal anything useful.

'Vanguard', the FGH history lists both Cramer and Rogers as 4 Jul casualties. B Sqn were initially supporting the Winnipegs by fire, a Troop was sent forward to assist when they ran into difficulty. Narrative says Rogers and Sgt AJ Innes-Ker were killed and had their tanks brewed up. Innes-Ker also reported as missing/killed 6 Jul.
